These first-time parents are forming a new leadership and communications team. Even without realizing it, they are planning a strategy for how to manage their newly expanded family and position it for the greatest success. They will be considering what to communicate effectively and just as importantly, how to communicate it consistently to reach their goals and objectives.
And, they will need to revisit and adjust their goals, objectives and key messages for each new twist and challenge that their baby will throw at them as he grows up (did I mention sleep?).
There are many parallels here to any business or organization that also continually identifies its strategic vision and direction, and sets or re-sets its goals and objectives.
In my experience, understanding what we want to achieve makes not just the task of communicating, but fulfilling the strategic objective, less daunting and more attainable. Effective leaders build, demonstrate and communicate a vision. Employees understand their role in contributing towards the success of that vision. Parents also choose the core values that are most important to them and demonstrate those values through their actions and their words everyday.
As I start this journey, I look forward to the hopes, dreams, growth, changes and curve balls surely to be thrown my way. I draw on my wealth of experiences guiding organizations as they endeavor to communicate purposefully, as well as the wisdom of my colleagues near and far.
Here I am, world!
